Goal Buddies

October 29th, 2009

In my last post, I told you that I have a personal coach to help me stay focused on my goals. As a university basketball coach for 11 years, I know the importance of goal setting with elite athletes and teams. Yet, it’s something that not a lot of people do. It’s great to write out your goals. But, the bigger challenge is to take action and follow through. See what you want (visualize) and then tell someone (verbalize) your goals. If you tell someone your goals, especially a coach who holds you accountable, you are more likely to realize those dreams. When you verbalize… it’s out there, Baby!

My athletes had a Goal Buddy. Before the first practice of the week, they had to write out their goals for practices and games that week. They had to be specific and measurable. They then had to exchange sheets with a teammate and verbalize their goals. They also had a “cue word”. This was a word that they could say to themselves at various times during the practice or game that would remind them of their focus, or goal. Their buddy had to memorize this cue word and remind them of it at various times during the practice. This was especially valuable if the player was struggling. The cue word from a teammate reminded them of ONE focus point instead of becoming overwhelmed with hundreds of potential stimuli (sound familiar anyone??). During water breaks, they were required to check in with their goal buddy.

So, you don’t necessarily need to hire a coach. You can ask your spouse, a co-worker, or a friend to be your Goal Buddy. Check in with them once or twice a month.

It’s definitely helping me realize my dreams.

Happiness is… MAKING time for the beach

Happy Dogs: Riley and Linus at the beach
Happy Dogs: Riley and Linus at the beach

Happiness is a beach – ESPECIALLY if you’re a Portuguese Water Dog. And no, I’m not talking about the Obama’s dog. We had Riley before it was trendy. Riley is a great dog. She’s very loyal, loves to cuddle, loves kids, and LOVES the beach. I have never seen such unbridled joy as when Riley and her boyfriend, Linus are romping through the water.

It was a gorgeous weekend here in Nova Scotia. I took the dogs for a run on the beach on Friday morning. I feel so grateful that we have some of the most stunning scenery in the world. Where else can you go to a beautiful white sand beach with absolutely no one else on it? I love taking the dogs to the beach for a run. Fitness is one of my priorities, not only for my physical, but also my mental health. Since we have access to some great beaches, it’s a special treat to take the extra time to travel to one for a run.

Unfortunately, most people don’t make the time to do the things that they really want. You’ll notice that I said MAKE time. Not FIND time. How often do you say to someone “I really wish I could find time to do that.” If you have to “try to find time”, you might as well say “I’d love to, but there’s no way I’m going to”. We all have good intentions. But, “finding time” is generally an intention that rarely gets fulfilled.

I was reminded of the difference between “making” and “finding” time last week. I have a personal coach through the Tony Robbins Company. One of my goals is to write 3 pages a day. I had been neglecting that until my coach reminded me of my goal and priorities. If we truly want to something, we have to MAKE time to do it and commit to it faithfully.

Not only do we need to make time to do the things that are really important to us, we have to do it guilt-free. And, I’m not necessarily talking about making the time for work-related goals. Take a walk on the beach, play with your kids, hang out with friends. All of this is good for our happiness and well-being. So, if it’s good for us, why do we feel guilty about making the time to do it? Because we are a Go-Go-Go Society. If you aren’t part of the Rat-Race, you’re going nowhere. As Lily Tomlin says “Even if I win the Rat-Race, I’m still a rat!”

If you make time for the important things, you will eliminate the unimportant by default. Which means you’ll get the career stuff done as well as the family, friends, and other stuff.

What do you need to make time for? What is the best use of your time RIGHT NOW to ensure you make it happen?

Down Days

Spread the laughter!

Everyone has what I call “Blah Days”. You know… everything is bugging you, or you think you’re wandering aimlessly through life, or it’s all JUST CRAPPY!

We have all been there – even those of us who stand up in front of an audience and spout off about positive thoughts and “You are what you think”. The key is knowing how to shake off those “Blah’s” before they drag you down into the “Blah Basement”.

I like to go for a run. I put on my favorite pump-up music (generally 80’s stuff!) and usually I feel much better by the time I’m done. That’s why exercise in our lives is so important. We not only benefit physically, but mentally as well. The endorphins flow and act much the same as an anti-depressant.

Here are a few more things that might help:

* Exercise: get those endorphins flowing. Even if it’s just a short walk on your break to clear your head. If you have access to a punching bag, that’s even better!
* Pump up your fave tunes and sing along or dance. If you’re at work and can’t get up to dance…do a little chair dancing (maybe with your cubicle neighbor)… or just dance in your head.
* Hop in your car and SCREAM. That’s right… get it all out.
* If you’re not into screaming, maybe meditating or chanting is more your thing. I have a positive chant meditation recording by Dr. Wayne Dyer that I like.
* Talk to someone.
* Yoga anyone? A downward facing dog can often help those downward facing blahs.
* I like to use a little squishy ball. When you feel a negative thought come into your head, squish the ball, switch hands, and replace it with a positive thought.
* Laugh. Sounds simple because it is. It has been proven that laughter releases endorphins, boosts the immune system, diminishes pain, and relaxes the body. When laughter is shared, it also strengthens relationships and and happiness. So, why not download your favorite comedian, show, or movie and share a laugh with someone on your way home from work today?

Wine and Cheesy?

September 1st, 2009

Wine goes with cheese… and good friends

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” – Lao-tzu

Ok, ok. I know what you’re thinking. “Do you serve wine with that cheesy first entry?” Though it may very well be a cliché- it’s still an appropriate post for me. You see, I tend to suffer from Paralysis by Analysis. I want to make everything just right before I take the plunge. Just look at my website as an example. I spent countless hours on it. Myself. A lot of hours. Way too many hours. Even though I am by no means a techie geek, I tried to learn HTML and CSS and all that other computer lingo that I have no business learning at this point. All because I was scared to launch my site until it looked “just so”.  Well, it doesn’t look the way I think it should. But, it’s out there driving along the Internet Highway, or Highway to Hell as I have been referring to it lately.

My website is not perfect. In fact, it’s a long way from perfect. But sometimes you just have to take that first step and hope that you land face up when you fall. At least that way you can still see where you’re going when you get up and try again (and you can also avoid someone trying to kick you in the arse when you are down).

So… here’s to a fine wine with my cheese and my first blog!
